- JUNE 23rd to the 26th 2005 - Olympia, WA - USA -
The Olympia Strange Music Society was founded in 1995 by Arrington de Dionyso and Jim McAdams, two KAOS dj's who agreed that while Olympia was certainly a fertile ground for independent rock music, there were other genres of very visceral music that were under-represented in the "scene".
What is Experimental Music? The Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics does not concern itself with answering this question directly, but each year presents a very diverse group of performers, each with their own very different approach to working with sound and performance.
The Eleventh Annual Olympia Festival of Experimental Musics was curated by Arrington de Dionyso. This year more than fifty performers arrived from Seattle, New Mexico, Vancouver BC, Japan, Los Angeles, Germany, Sweden, and Italy. We were especially pleased to present some very special international guests- NA, from Japan, Luciana Manca, a sound poet/voice performer from Pisa, Italy; Johannes Bergmark, of Sweden, residing at the time in Poland; and Jeffrey Morgan, born and raised in Olympia but residing in Cologne, Germany. Mr. Bergmark, in addition to his performance on Friday night, gave a special lecture/workshop on Saturday afternoon of June 25th detailing some of the many unique instruments he has invented, as well as his involvement in the International Surrealist Movement.
To close out the Festival, there was a screening of experimental films from the Pacific Northwest and beyond at the Capitol Theater on Sunday June 26 at 9:00 PM. Many of the films featured live soundtracks performed by experimental and improvising musicians. Curator Eric Ostrowski premiered a work with live soundtrack by Experimental Music Festival perennials Noggin, which was their first electric performance in over a year.

This is a very good longer piece reviewing what one writer saw
of the festival several years ago.
